In the wake of the Senate’s disastrous bipartisan border security bill, Texas Senator Ted Cruz says it’s time for new leadership at the top; McConnell should step down, Cruz says.
During a joint press conference alongside Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., Ron Johnson, R-Wis., Mike Lee, R-Utah, and J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, Cruz stated it is time to ditch Mitch.
When asked by a reporter if it was time for McConnell to go, Cruz answered “I think it is.”
“Everyone here also supported a leadership challenge to Mitch McConnell in November,” Cruz added. “I think a Republican leader should actually lead this conference and should advance the priorities of Republicans.”

Not every GOP Senator believes McConnell should shoulder the blame for the failed border bill. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said blaming McConnell for the border bill’s failure is “a bit misplaced” while Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said it’s “not Mitch’s fault” about the bill’s failure, nor Sen. Lankford’s, who he said “did the best he could under the circumstances.”
Negotiations on the bill were largely kept secret. Once the text of the bill was released earlier this week, House GOP leadership declared the bill “dead on arrival.”
