The guns have stopped for the moment. The clock has not.
President Trump warned Monday that Tehran has only a narrow window to reach an agreement before the United States resumes military operations, describing the ongoing negotiations as serious but highly time-sensitive.
“We are in very deep talks with Iran: If they don’t work out, we will go back to very strong military action,” Trump told Axios.
Asked how long Iran has to produce a deal, the president offered an answer unlikely to calm anyone in Tehran.
“Not much time. Either it goes fast or not at all.”
The ultimatum comes during a three-night pause in US attacks, which Trump said was requested by countries attempting to mediate between Washington and the Iranian regime.
“All of the people that deal with Iran asked me: ‘Don’t fire,’” Trump said.
Trump agreed to hold back, but his comments made clear that he views the pause as an opportunity for Iran to make a decision, not an invitation to drag out negotiations. The president said he believes Tehran wants an agreement after facing heavy American military pressure.
He also argued that the temporary halt has cost the United States nothing while offering immediate economic relief.
“Nothing gained, nothing lost,” Trump said, pointing to lower oil prices and rising stock prices after the attacks stopped.
The next major diplomatic moment comes Tuesday, when Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Their discussions are expected to focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
The meeting puts Netanyahu in Washington at a critical point. Trump must weigh demands from mediators for restraint, Israel’s security concerns and Iran’s conduct around one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
For now, the president is allowing the talks to play out. But he is coupling that opening with an unmistakable threat that American military power remains ready if Tehran stalls or rejects a deal.
