No web shooters. No movie effects. Just a friendly neighborhood hero who happened to be in the right lane at the right time.
A 20-year-old Arkansas man dressed as Spider-Man sprang from his red Jeep to help a wheelchair user cross six lanes of traffic, completing the rescue seconds before the light changed.
Christopher Hellenthal was still wearing the costume from a superhero-themed event at the Ultimate Air Trampoline Park, where he works, when he spotted the man struggling in a Jonesboro crosswalk Tuesday.
Hellenthal jumped from the Jeep, ran into the road and delivered the only line the moment required.
“I got you.”
He grabbed the wheelchair and hurried the man safely to the opposite side. Hellenthal then raced back to his vehicle as the signal changed and traffic began moving.
The perfectly timed rescue was captured by a city security camera and shared by the Jonesboro Police Department, which thanked Hellenthal for helping the man reach safety.
“I had a bunch of adrenaline pumping through me,” Hellenthal told The Associated Press, explaining that he knew he had to act quickly in the heavy midday traffic.
“I was just kind of thinking, ‘I’m wearing this suit; it’s gonna be pretty funny.’”
The video quickly took off online, collecting tens of thousands of reactions. One viewer noted that Hellenthal missed a golden opportunity to strike a classic Spider-Man pose before returning to his Jeep.
He had a good excuse. The light turned green “pretty fast,” Hellenthal said.
“Not in my 7 years in the department have I witnessed this,” Jonesboro Police Department spokesperson Sally Smith told the AP.
Police did not publicly identify the wheelchair user.
Hellenthal, who lives in nearby Lake City, has been a Spider-Man fan for years and once met the late Stan Lee, the Marvel legend who co-created the character.
Packy Magel, a manager at the trampoline park, immediately recognized his employee beneath the mask.
It was “very much like him to do something like that and very much like him to be still in costume,” Magel said.
