Tom Homan has a new name for President Trump’s accelerating immigration crackdown: “deportation-maxxing.”
The border czar’s internet-ready phrase comes with serious numbers behind it. ICE booked more than 43,000 people into immigration detention in June, the agency’s highest monthly total since Trump returned to the White House, according to CBS News’ analysis of newly released ICE data.
That works out to 1,438 arrests per day. Then July started even hotter.
During the first 11 days of the month, ICE averaged 1,593 daily arrests, putting the agency on pace to break its freshly minted June record.
“We’re hitting on all cylinders now. We’re deportation-maxxing since we were fully funded,” Homan said during a Wednesday interview with NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich.
The surge follows a slowdown that Homan blamed partly on the congressional standoff over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
“Numbers were down for a few months because the department was shut down,” Homan separately told reporters this week.
The Trump administration has placed enormous pressure on ICE to accelerate enforcement. Sources inside the agency told CBS News that agents were instructed to pursue 2,000 arrests per day, although a DHS spokesperson denied that ICE operates under arrest quotas.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has also set an ambitious goal of doubling last year’s deportations. DHS says it deported 675,000 illegal immigrants in 2025, while an estimated 2.2 million others left voluntarily.
