A new Rasmussen poll shows most American voters back President Donald Trump’s plan for a census that excludes illegal immigrants.
The survey found 57% of likely voters agree with Trump’s decision, including 36% who strongly agree. About a third (34%) disagreed, with 24% strongly opposed. The poll, conducted August 11–13 among 1,184 likely voters, carries a margin of error of three points.
The decennial U.S. Census determines both congressional apportionment and the distribution of federal funding.
Earlier this month, President Trump announced he had ordered a new census that excludes illegal immigrants. The last census was conducted in 2020, with the next scheduled for 2030.
Trump wrote: “I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern-day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024. People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The move comes as redistricting battles intensify nationwide. In Texas, Democratic lawmakers fled the state for weeks to stall a vote on new GOP-drawn maps that add five Republican seats in the U.S. House. California’s redistricting plan will go before voters on the November ballot.
