Poverty-stricken Venezuelans exploded on social media Tuesday after video of socialist President Nicolas Maduro’s lavish dinner party hit the internet, with local politicians and organizations demanding the leader’s removal from office.

The footage shows Maduro dining alongside his wife and celebrity chef Nusret Gökçe at a restaurant in Turkey; eating lamb, drinking, and smoking expensive cigars as his residents struggle to find daily food.

“VENEZUELA DIES OF HUNGER and the murderous dictator of Maduro giving himself a banquet of more than $ 1,500 with YOUR MONEY! They eat and we Venezuelans die because of the lack of food and medicines,” posted one political organization.

Venezuelan Socialist President Nicolas Maduro was caught on camera eating a $100 steak and smoking lavish cigars during a recent trip to Asia; infuriating millions of starving residents struggling with a collapsing economy and vanishing food supplies.

According to Bloomberg, images of Maduro dining at a famous steak restaurant in Turkey went viral on social media within minutes. The socialist president was traveling back from China where he sought aid for his impoverished nation.

“Maduro visited Nusr-Et, known for its $100 rib-eye, after making an official trip to China in hopes of securing financing for cash-strapped Venezuela. In videos posted by Nusret to Twitter and Instagram, Maduro is seen eating steak next to his wife, Cilia Flores, while also holding a cigar and trying on a t-shirt depicting Nusret, also known as Salt Bae and famous for how he prepares and seasons steaks,” writes Bloomberg.

Venezuela is struggling to clampdown on a devastating financial crisis. Recent reports say nearly 79% of the nation’s residents are unable to “feed themselves” on a daily basis.

Venezuela’s socialist government took drastic measures this week to help navigate the country through its most recent economic crisis; unveiling new regulations that boost the nation’s minimum wage by 3,000%.

The measure -coupled with slashing five zeros from the Venezuelan currency- aims to boost residents’ purchasing power, with average household items like eggs and paper towels costing millions of Bolivares.

“I want the country to recover and I have the formula. Trust me,” President Maduro told the nation in a primetime address. “We are going to begin a process of recovery in the coming days, weeks and month… It’s a revolutionary formula… unique in the world!”

“The recovery package includes measures such as raising taxes, increasing petrol prices for some drivers, and introducing a rebranded currency – the sovereign bolívar – which will have five fewer zeros than its inflation-stricken predecessor, the bolívar,” writes the Guardian.
