LONE STAR FREEDOM: Dallas Salon Owner Released from Prison by Texas Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Texas ordered the release of a Dallas salon owner Thursday after she was arrested for violating the state’s ‘Stay at Home’ order that closed her business for weeks.

“The Supreme Court of Texas has ordered the release of Dallas salon owner, Shelly Luther, who was jailed for violating executive stay at home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic,” reports CBS Dallas. “She’s currently in isolation and protective custody at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center in Dallas.”

Luther was arrested and fined $7,000 for opening without the state’s permission has raised more than $200,000 online since the incident; vowing to defy the “unlawful order.”

A Dallas salon owner will spend at least seven days in a local prison for defying the state’s shutdown order for personal care and grooming services during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“In addition, Shelley Luther was fined $7,000 for continuing to operate her business, Salon à la Mode, in violation of a judge’s temporary restraining order issued against the business. Luther was taken into custody immediately after the hearing and booked into the Dallas County jail just after 4:30 p.m.,” reports the Dallas News.

“Like other businesses deemed nonessential, Luther’s Far North Dallas salon was forced to close March 22 after the county enacted its stay-at-home order. She reopened the salon April 24 despite that order, and tore up a cease-and-desist letter from County Judge Clay Jenkins at a demonstration the next day,” adds the website.

“I couldn’t feed my family, and my stylists couldn’t feed their families,” Luther told the court. “If you think the law is more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision, but I am not going to shut the salon.”
