A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in New Jersey opened fire on a fleeing van Monday morning after authorities say the officer was struck by the suspect’s vehicle during an attempted arrest operation.
The incident unfolded around 9:30 a.m. in Stafford Township, roughly 60 miles east of Philadelphia, as federal agents attempted to take a suspect into custody.
According to reports, the suspect tried to flee in a van and struck the ICE agent during the escape attempt. The officer then fired multiple rounds at the vehicle as it sped away.
Authorities have not yet released the identity or description of the suspect, nor have they confirmed whether the driver was injured by the gunfire.
Sources told NBC Philadelphia that the injured ICE agent is expected to recover.
The outlet reported the van’s rear window may have been shattered when the agent opened fire.
Officials also have not disclosed why the suspect was being pursued or whether any arrests have been made following the confrontation.
The shooting and vehicle strike prompted a major law enforcement response along Route 72, which authorities shut down in both directions as investigators processed the scene.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement operations nationwide and follows several recent confrontations involving ICE agents and fleeing suspects.
As of Monday afternoon, federal authorities had not released additional details about the operation or the suspect involved.
