FROM DREAM TO EXODUS: Zakaria Slams California Housing, Homelessness, and Costs [WATCH]

CNN host Fareed Zakaria delivered a blistering critique of California’s Democratic leadership Sunday, calling the Golden State a “failing model of governance” despite its enormous economic strength.

During an episode of Fareed Zakaria GPS, Zakaria argued that rising Republican momentum in California politics should alarm Democratic leaders.

He specifically pointed to Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton advancing in the governor’s race and media personality Spencer Pratt finishing third in the Los Angeles mayoral contest.

“California Democrats will be tempted to dismiss all of this as a sideshow, but the frustration is real and justified,” Zakaria said.

The longtime CNN anchor described California as “one of the most dynamic places on the planet,” citing Silicon Valley, Hollywood, elite universities, agriculture, and international trade hubs.

But he argued the state’s governance has failed ordinary residents.

“The paradox of California today is a successful economy attached to a failing model of governance,” Zakaria said.

He noted that California’s population has increased by roughly 15% since 2000, while government spending has increased by more than 200%, reaching approximately $248 billion.

“That means the state is spending roughly $6,300 per person, up from $2,300,” Zakaria said before asking: “Does anyone think that California government and its benefits have gotten 200% better in the last 25 years?”

Zakaria singled out housing as California’s “central failure,” blaming heavy regulation and bureaucracy for skyrocketing home prices and rents.

He said the affordability crisis has fueled a mass exodus from the state, claiming California has lost a net 1.9 million residents through domestic outmigration over the past seven years.

“For generations, people moved to California to pursue the future,” he said. “Now many middle-class people are leaving because they can’t afford one.”

The CNN host also criticized California’s handling of homelessness and education despite years of increased spending.

Though billions have been spent combating homelessness, Zakaria argued the state’s sprawling aid infrastructure has failed to meaningfully solve the problem.

“Homelessness did decline by about 3% from 2024 to 2025, but the state’s expansive, expensive and elaborate homelessness aid complex has not proven to solve homelessness in any significant way,” he said.

Zakaria added that California’s strong GDP numbers often obscure deeper structural weaknesses because industries like Silicon Valley continue generating enormous wealth.
