Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went to Memphis to fire up Southern progressives. Critics say she came home with a new accent.
The New York Democrat faced a wave of online mockery after speaking Friday at a campaign rally for Justin Pearson, a progressive congressional candidate and current Tennessee state representative.
Ocasio-Cortez urged the crowd to think beyond state lines, arguing that Democrats cannot abandon conservative territory across the South.
“We cannot afford to leave Tennessee behind,” she said. “We cannot afford to leave Kentucky behind, Alabama behind, Mississippi behind, Georgia behind, South Carolina behind. There is no country where we are split apart.”
The controversy erupted during the next part of her speech, when Ocasio-Cortez recalled a recent trip to Alabama with fellow “Squad” member Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.
“About a month or two ago, we were in Montgomery, Alabama,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Sister Pressley and I were in Montgomery, Alabama, and one of the things that we said was that it is time for the North to roll up to the South.”
Bless her heart, AOC wants to take over the South.

Critics claimed the Bronx-born lawmaker altered her voice during those remarks, accusing her of adopting the cadence of a Southern preacher for the Memphis audience.
Actor Michael Rapaport, who has said he plans to run for New York City mayor in 2029, joined the pile-on.
“AOC, from the ‘Bronx’ sounding like a southern Baptist preacher while in Memphis,” Rapaport wrote on social media.
Conservative communications strategist Steve Guest argued that Ocasio-Cortez had joined a long line of Democratic politicians accused of changing their speaking style depending on the crowd.
“Hillary Clinton developed an accent. Kamala Harris developed an accent. AOC is developing an accent. It’s all patronizing,” Guest wrote.
Another social media user tied the moment to speculation that Ocasio-Cortez could seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
“Rep. AOC just got busted putting on a FAKE ACCENT for a predominantly black audience,” the user wrote. “She’s seriously going full Kamala for 2028.”
