The Windy City continues to ride a deadly crime spike. According to the Chicago Police Department, there were 797 recorded homicides in 2021 – 25 more than during 2020 and 299 more than in 2019.
…it’s the highest murder rate in almost 25 years.
Then there are the “almost murders” —more than 3,500 shootings were recorded in Chicago in 2021. ABC News’ Craig Wall shared some of the numbers on Twitter.
“Sad and sobering homicide numbers for Cook County this year: 1009 and counting (777 in Chicago). The last time they were more than 1000 in a year was 1994 when there were 1141. In 1991 the medical examiner’s office handled a record 1229 homicides.” Wall tweeted.

The city of Chicago – and the CPD especially- are growing frustrated with Lightfoot’s inability to get the crime crisis under control. Last week, a Chicago police dispatcher blasted the mayor on Facebook for not supporting her police force.
”I pray you’re watching this because you’re a disgrace and I’m tired of it,” Keith Thornton Jr. said in a video to Lightfoot. ”And your city is tired of it. Matter of fact, it’s not your city. The city of Chicago is tired of it.”
”And I know you don’t like me, and that’s OK, because I love you,” Thornton added. ”But I’m tired of you because you’re an absolute disgrace to everyone within the city.”
