President Donald Trump promised swift retaliation Wednesday after Iran launched a surprise missile attack targeting American forces in Jordan.
“We’ll beat the f—ing s— out of them,” Trump told Fox News chief foreign affairs correspondent Trey Yingst.
“We’ll be hitting them hard,” the president added. “They’re going to get a beating.”
The U.S. military said every Iranian missile targeting American forces was intercepted. Jordan’s military separately reported destroying five Iranian missiles, with no casualties immediately reported from the barrage.
The attempted strike shattered a brief pause in direct fighting after Trump halted U.S. attacks Friday to give diplomatic efforts another chance.
Iran apparently decided to test that pause.
Trump’s answer was blunt, but he said the door to negotiations would remain open even as the U.S. prepares its military response.
“We’re going to let them keep talking,” he said.
Regional mediators led by Qatar and Pakistan have reported progress in efforts to restore negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Iran maintains that the discussions are being conducted through intermediaries rather than direct talks with American officials, according to the Associated Press.
