President Trump’s nominee to lead the CIA educated Congressional Democrats over the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques” during her confirmation hearing Wednesday, blasting liberal Senators for confusing “terrorists” with intelligence officers.
Gina Haspel was speaking with Democrat Sen. Jack Reed when she was asked to comment on the CIA’s prior use of “waterboarding” terror suspects under extreme circumstances; a practice now barred by the US Congress.
“Would you determine that to be immoral and something that should never be done, condoned in any way, shape, or form?” Reed asked. “Your response seems to be that civilized nations don’t do it, but uncivilized nations do it, or uncivilized groups do it. A civilized nation was doing it until it was outlawed by this Congress.”
“Senator, I would never obviously support inhumane treatment of any CIA officers,” Haspel said. “We’ve lost CIA officers over the years to terrorists. I just gave an example. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed personally killed a Wall Street Journal correspondent and filmed that. I don’t think there’s any comparison between CIA officers serving their country, adhering to U.S. law, and terrorists who, by their very definition, are not following anybody’s law.”
DESPERATE DEMS: Liberals Still Have ‘GREAT CONCERNS’ Over Mike Pompeo
Liberal legislators in the Senate continued their struggle this week to derail President Trump’s pick to head the State Department, saying they have “great concerns” over Mike Pompeo’s qualifications to become the nation’s top diplomat.
Senate Democrats blasted Pompeo Monday, with nearly all of their members opposing the nominee over his support in pulling out of the Iranian nuclear agreement and the Paris Climate Accords.
“I honestly don’t see that,” said Sen. Debbie Stabenow when pressed if Democrats were attempting to block the nominee for political purposes. “People have very great concerns. I’m not saying that’s not part of it for somebody, but there’s a lot of legitimate concerns I think.”
“I think someone who has publicly supported pulling out of the Paris Agreement, pulling out of the Iran agreement, using sorties to destroy the nuclear program in North Korea, is different than past nominees,” added another left-leaning Senator.
In comparison, both Hillary Clinton and John Kerry -politicians largely unpopular in conservative and Republican circles- garnered 94 votes when they were confirmed under President Barack Obama.
DEMOCRATS CAVE: Mike Pompeo CONFIRMED as Secretary of State
President Trump’s nominee to replace Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State was officially confirmed Thursday; following weeks of Democratic opposition against former CIA director Mike Pompeo.
According to Fox News, the Senate voted 57-42 to officially confirm Pompeo as the nation’s top diplomat; with seven Senators who caucus with the Democratic Party bucking leadership and voting in the affirmative.
The Democrats voting “yes” included Senators Heitkamp, Joe Manchin, and Joe Donnelly.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito swore in Pompeo immediately following the highly-anticipated vote.
