DEVELOPING: Nevada Governor VETOES Bill to Bypass Electoral College

posted by Hannity Staff - 5.30.19

Nevada’s Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak officially vetoed legislation Thursday that would require his state’s electoral votes be cast for whichever presidential candidate wins the popular vote.

“After thoughtful deliberation, I have decided to veto Assembly Bill 186,” Sisolak said in a statement. “Once effective, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact could diminish the role of smaller states like Nevada in national electoral contests and force Nevada’s electors to side with whoever wins the nationwide popular vote, rather than the candidate Nevadans choose.”

“I recognize that many of my fellow Nevadans may disagree on this point and I appreciate the legislature’s thoughtful consideration of this important issue,” he added.

If approved, the state would join a handful of others across the country pledging to cast their electoral votes to the popular winner; effectively bypassing the Electoral College as required under the US Constitution.

“Fourteen states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation to join the pact, which will only take effect if a number of states holding the majority of the Electoral College’s 538 electoral votes join the agreement,” reports The Hill.

Supporters of the legislation say the law would make America’s election system more democratic, with critics claiming the move is an attempt to bypass the Electoral system after Hillary Clinton’s defeat to Donald Trump in 2016.

A handful of Democratic candidates -including Elizabeth Warren and Beto O’Rourke- have called for the elimination of the Electoral College; claiming the system is “outdated’ and based on historical slavery in the United States.

“I believe we need a constitutional amendment that protects the right to vote for every American citizen and makes sure that vote gets counted,” said Warren during a televised town hall event in March.

“We need to put some federal muscle behind that, and we need to repeal every one of the voter suppression laws that is out there,” she added. “Every vote matters, and the way we can make that happen is that we can have national voting, and that means get rid of the Electoral College.”

DESPERATE DEMS: Trump BLASTS Democrats' Push to Lower Voting Age, End Electoral College, Pack Courts

President Trump slammed “very strange” Democrats on social media Tuesday evening; blasting liberal lawmakers for their desperate push to pack the Supreme Court, end the electoral college, and lower the voting age to 16.

“The Democrats are getting very ‘strange.’ They now want to change the voting age to 16, abolish the Electoral College, and Increase significantly the number of Supreme Court Justices. Actually, you’ve got to win it at the Ballot Box!” tweeted the Commander-in-Chief.

Leading Democrats -including Beto O’Rourke and Elizabeth Warren- called for the abolishment of the Electoral College this week while Speaker Pelosi threw her support behind lowering the national voting age to “capture kids” in high school.

END ELECTORAL COLLEGE? Nevada Passes New Legislation Pegging Electoral Votes to Popular Vote

Nevada is poised to become the next state to peg their electoral votes to the popular vote; passing new legislation Tuesday evening that would bypass the Constitutional process regarding presidential elections.

“The Nevada Senate approved Tuesday a National Popular Vote bill on a party-line vote, sending the legislation aimed at upending the Electoral College to the governor,” reports the Washington Times.

“Assembly Bill 186, which passed the Senate on a 12-8 vote, would bring Nevada into the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, an agreement between participating states to cast their electoral votes for the winner of the popular vote,” adds the article.

If signed into law by Nevada’s Democratic Governor, the state would officially join 14 other “jurisdictions” across the country that have pledged their delegates to the popular vote.

Supporters of the bill say the legislation will improve the Democratic process by allowing Americans to directly elect their president. Critics say the move is a direct attempt to subvert the US constitution following Hillary Clinton’s defeat to Donald Trump.
