About a dozen Democratic Socialists of America activists have signed a pledge to “support” and “defend” Chinese socialism, putting a bright red spotlight on the movement behind New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The pledge comes from Friends of Socialist China, a London-based organization that says it promotes the People’s Republic and its communist system.
“We resolve to support, defend and build understanding of Chinese socialism,” the public declaration states.
The New York Post identified 11 signers who described themselves as DSA members or participants in its International Committee. The Times of London reported a slightly higher number. The organization maintains a live list, and affiliations are supplied by the signers.
The pledge is not identified as an official DSA resolution. Still, the involvement of activists connected to the organization’s international work is sure to fuel questions about just how cozy parts of Mamdani’s socialist movement have become with Beijing.

Friends of Socialist China doesn’t hide the ball.
Its declaration calls capitalism “totally incapable” of addressing poverty and inequality while linking it to war, racism, misogyny and environmental destruction.
China, meanwhile, gets the red-carpet treatment.
The group calls Beijing “the most prominent force” pushing a new international order and argues that China has a critical role in the “global transition to socialism.”
It goes further.
“The continued survival of Chinese socialism is a crucial matter not only for the Chinese people but for all humanity,” the pledge says.
That admiration has been spilling into DSA circles for months.
The organization launched a seminar series examining “modern China and lessons for US socialists.” One early session reportedly presented China as a “strong democracy,” despite the Chinese Communist Party’s censorship, political repression and intolerance of organized dissent.
DSA activists have also traveled to China. A five-person delegation visited Beijing during events marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II.
One participant, New York City DSA member Dee Knight, later described a capital that “buzzed with excitement” in an essay published by the DSA-affiliated Socialist Forum.
