A major Medicare fraud scandal inside California’s hospice system is drawing scrutiny not just for the money lost, but for how little attention it has received from major television networks.
According to an analysis by the Media Research Center, both ABC News and NBC News have devoted zero seconds on their flagship morning and evening broadcasts to the issue, despite warnings from federal officials about widespread fraud.
The alarm was first raised in January by Mehmet Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, who flagged what he described as rampant abuse within California’s hospice system.
One network, however, did break through.
CBS News aired multiple reports beginning March 10 across “CBS Mornings” and the “CBS Evening News,” totaling more than 17 minutes of coverage across eight segments.
In one of those reports, correspondent Adam Yamaguchi highlighted the scale of the problem.
An estimated $200 million was lost to Medicare hospice fraud in California in 2023 alone, with officials acknowledging the problem has persisted despite promises made four years ago to crack down.
