Senate Dems have now blocked a GOP funding bill three times…
Neither Republicans nor Democrats blinked Wednesday, less than 24 hours into a government shutdown, as a GOP bid to extend funding was blocked for the third time.
Despite GOP leaders signaling confidence that more Democrats would cross the aisle, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and his caucus shot down the Republican continuing resolution (CR) in a 53-45 vote.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) vowed to keep forcing votes on the measure: “We are just one Senate roll call vote away from ending the shutdown. We need a handful of Democrats to join Republicans to reopen the government. And once we do that, then we can talk about the issues that Democrats are raising. But we’re not going to engage in bipartisan discussions while Democrats are holding the federal government hostage to their partisan demands.”
On Tuesday, there were glimmers of hope for Republicans when Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Angus King (I-ME), and John Fetterman (D-PA) broke ranks to support the GOP bill. But by Wednesday, that trio remained the only members of the Democratic caucus to cross the aisle.
Republicans held their ranks as well — with the exception of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) who again opposed the measure.
Thune said the Senate will briefly recess to observe Yom Kippur on Thursday before resuming votes on Friday. The GOP leader needs at least 60 votes to break a Democratic filibuster and advance the bill.

Chuck Schumer and his caucus just chose illegal alien entitlements over keeping the government open.
This was a simple bill to fund essential services. No pork. No handouts. Just basic… pic.twitter.com/CdorQfaWg6
