Chicago was rocked by a wave of gun violence over the Juneteenth weekend, with six people killed and at least 39 others wounded in a string of shootings that unfolded across the city over a three-day span.
The violence included a drive-by mass shooting on Chicago’s South Side and a series of deadly incidents that left victims ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens.
According to police, roughly two dozen shooting incidents were reported between Friday evening and Sunday night.
One of the largest shootings occurred Friday night in Princeton Park, where two unidentified gunmen opened fire into a crowd gathered on the South Side.
Twelve people were struck by gunfire, including eight men and four women, and were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Later that same evening, 29-year-old Mario Price was killed in a separate drive-by shooting after being struck multiple times in the body and face. A nearby 70-year-old man was also wounded when a bullet struck his leg but survived.
Additional shootings continued throughout Saturday and Sunday, adding to the mounting casualty count and stretching police resources across multiple neighborhoods.
The violence came just one day after another tragedy shook the city.
A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot Thursday after being struck multiple times by gunfire. The teenager was a member of the Midwest Hawks youth football program, which issued an emotional statement mourning his death.
“There are no words that can ease the pain of a loss like this,” the organization said.
The deadly weekend prompted a sharp response from President Donald Trump, who publicly criticized Illinois Gov. J. B. Pritzker and urged state leaders to seek federal assistance.
“Lots of Killing going on in Chicago,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!!”
Trump also pointed to his administration’s crime-fighting efforts in the nation’s capital.
“D.C. went from one of the worst to one of the safest cities in the U.S.,” he wrote.
The president has previously deployed federal resources and National Guard personnel to cities facing public safety challenges, including Portland, Los Angeles and Memphis.
