The brother who once stepped in to raise his little sister will now have that sister step into the Senate seat he left behind.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone on Monday to serve the remaining months of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s term.
“Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now,” McMaster said at a Statehouse news conference.

Nordone, who has never held elected office, is expected to serve through the expiration of Graham’s term in January 2027. She will also become the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate, according to The Associated Press.
“Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him,” Nordone said.
Then she delivered a message directly to the brother she lost.
“But I’m going to do this. I got it.”
President Donald Trump had publicly urged McMaster to select Nordone hours before the governor’s announcement.
“I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina,” Trump wrote on TRUTH Social. “This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!” CBS News reported that Sen. Tim Scott also backed Nordone as a temporary successor.

The appointment carries a deeply personal weight.
Graham was only in his early 20s when the siblings lost both parents. Their mother died in 1976, and their father suffered a fatal heart attack less than two years later. Graham later became Nordone’s legal guardian, helping her receive military benefits while he served in the Air Force.
Nordone has credited her brother with pushing her to finish high school and attend college. She later worked to help people with disabilities find employment and frequently appeared alongside Graham during his political career, according to The Washington Post.
She introduced him when he launched his long-shot presidential campaign in 2015. Graham, a lifelong bachelor, even joked during that campaign that his sister could help fill the role of first lady if he reached the White House.
Graham died Saturday night at age 71. A preliminary medical examiner’s report said he suffered an aortic dissection, a tear in the body’s main artery. Officials said a final cause of death would follow additional testing.
Hannity’s Highlights
Gov. McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone to complete her brother Lindsey Graham’s Senate term — tapping her to fill his vacated seat.
Nordone will become South Carolina’s first female U.S. senator — a historic milestone for the state.
Trump and Tim Scott both publicly backed the appointment — giving Nordone immediate high-profile support from the top of the GOP.
A special GOP primary is set for Aug. 11 — the contest will determine who carries the Republican banner in the race to win the seat outright.
His death also scrambled South Carolina’s 2026 Senate contest. Graham had already captured the Republican nomination and was seeking a fifth term.
Under the timetable outlined by The Associated Press, candidate filing is set to begin July 21, followed by a special Republican primary Aug. 11 and a possible runoff Aug. 25.
The eventual nominee will face Democratic candidate Annie Andrews in November.
