President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Canada late Wednesday, threatening potential trade repercussions if the country proceeds with a plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.
The warning came after Canadian Premier Mark Carney announced that Canada would align with France and the United Kingdom in formally backing Palestinian statehood—an announcement that immediately drew criticism from Washington.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!”
Breitbart News reports that Canada’s decision comes amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that began with attacks by Palestinian terrorist groups. The move has also sparked backlash due to several unresolved issues, including Hamas still holding 50 Israeli hostages—20 of whom are believed to be alive—undefined borders for a future Palestinian state, and the autocratic nature of the Palestinian Authority.
Trump, who has consistently opposed Palestinian statehood under current conditions, has referred to such recognition efforts as a “reward for Hamas.” Families of the Israeli hostages share that view, arguing that supporting Palestinian statehood before hostages are freed only encourages further acts of terror.
Until now, Trump had refrained from taking action against Western allies who endorsed Palestinian statehood amid the conflict. However, his statement Wednesday night signals a shift in tone, placing Canada on notice just days before an important trade deadline.
Currently, the U.S. and Canada are engaged in what Carney has described as “intense” trade negotiations, with new tariffs potentially taking effect on August 1. Despite the high stakes, Carney’s decision to support Palestinian statehood appears to prioritize ideological alignment with anti-Israel voices over economic diplomacy, risking the future of a critical trade relationship with the U.S.
