STATE OF COLUMBIA? Democrats Launch Historic Push to Turn DC into 51st State

posted by Hannity Staff - 9.19.19

Democrats in the House of Representatives launched a historic bid to transform the District of Columbia into a full-blown state this week; a move that would give the federal territory one Congressperson and two Senators.

House Democrats, in their first hearing on D.C. statehood in more than 25 years, on Thursday advocated for the District of Columbia to become the country’s 51st state as Republicans raised concerns about recent corruption scandals involving local D.C. officials,” reports Fox News.

“Critics of D.C. statehood have long cited local corruption as one reason to oppose statehood,” adds Fox. “Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the top Republican on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, said he wanted Thursday’s hearing to delve into the ongoing scandal involving D.C. Councilman Jack Evans.”

“Sadly the allegations against Mr. Evans are just the latest in a series of local D.C. political scandals,” Jordan said. “We cannot and should not ignore these unpleasant facts.”

Earlier this week, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser installed hundreds of ‘51-star’ flags across Washington to signal her support for statehood.

“DC veterans have served and died for their country, yet they lack representation in Congress. Join us tomorrow as we raise the 51 star flag, honor our vets and rally behind DC statehood,” posted the Mayor on social media.

“The nation’s capital has lined Pennsylvania Avenue with 51-star American flags as the city of Washington, D.C. prepares for a hearing on statehood this week. Roughly 140 flags were put up by District Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office and can be seen down Pennsylvania Avenue NW lining the space between the White House and the U.S. Capitol,” reports Fox News.

“The bill calls for districtwide elections of two senators and one House representative. It says all district territory would be included in the declaration, save for specific exclusions of federal buildings and monuments, such as the White House,” adds Fox.

STATEHOOD? DC Mayor Installs ‘51-Star US Flags’ Across Capital, Calls for District Statehood

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser installed dozens of ‘51-Star’ US flags along Pennsylvania Avenue this week; demanding the federal district be granted statehood and equal representation in Congress.

“It’s both powerful & subtle to see 51-star flags on Pennsylvania Ave today,” posted the Council of DC.

TWO MORE SENATORS? Rep. Wants Vote on DC STATEHOOD if Dems Retake Congress

posted by Hannity Staff - 6.08.18

Washington, D.C.’s lone delegate in the House of Representatives confirmed Friday that she plans to call a vote on making the capital the 51st state of the union should Democrats retake the majority; effectively adding two more liberal senators to the US Congress.

Non-voting Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton made the surprising announcement from the House floor Friday; pledging to transform the District of Columbia into a full-fledged state with two Senators and voting members of Congress.

“If in fact there is Democratic control, I will seek a vote on D.C. statehood,” said Norton. “I got a vote on D.C. statehood when I first came to the Congress. It’s time to have another vote on DC statehood.”

The Congresswoman goes on to say that the district has a larger population than Vermont and Wyoming, and that her constituents have “no representation” in the US Congress.

“The people I represent, 700,000 of them, are No. 1 in taxes paid to support the government of the United States,” she said. “Yet they have no representation whatsoever in that body down the hall, the Senate of the United States.”
