Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom flipped out about the future of democracy last week after receiving unsolicited “Trump 2028” merchandise suggesting President Donald Trump could seek a third term.
“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” Newsom said at a Politico forum in Sacramento. “I have two dozen ‘Trump 2028’ hats his folks keep sending me.”
The audience laughed at the revelation, which Newsom — widely seen as a potential 2028 contender — framed as trolling.
“Who spends $200 million on a ballroom at their home and then leaves the house?” he added, when pressed on whether he believes Trump intends to run again, again drawing laughter.
“This is serious, guys, this is serious,” Newsom admonished. “This guy doesn’t believe in free, fair elections. He tried to wreck this country. Were you there Jan. 6?”
It remains unclear whether the hats came from Trump’s campaign or supporters. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
