Columbia University is waving the white flag…
According to recent statements released by the administration at Columbia University, parts of the school will be closed off to students and faculty, and the media has been suspended from campus.
Effective immediately, access to the Morningside campus has been limited to students residing in residential buildings on campus (Carman, Furnald, John Jay, Hartley, Wallach, East Campus and Wien) and employees who provide essential services to campus buildings, labs and residential student life (for example, Dining, Public Safety, and building maintenance staff). There is no additional access to the Morningside campus.Â
The only access point into and out of campus is the 116th Street and Amsterdam gate. All other campus entry points are closed. Security personnel will remain in place at the Wien Gate for individuals requiring disability access to Wien Hall and East Campus.Â
This access restriction will remain in place until circumstances allow otherwise.Â
The safety of every single member of this community is paramount. We thank you for your patience, cooperation and understanding.
This additional message was released later in the morning:
Early this morning, a group of protestors occupied Hamilton Hall on the Morningside campus of Columbia University. The safety of every single member of this community is paramount.
The first step we have taken is to alert our campus community — in light of the protest activity, we have asked members of the University community who can avoid coming to the Morningside campus to do so; essential personnel should report to work according to university policy. Access to campus has been limited to students residing in residential buildings on campus and employees who provide essential services to campus buildings, labs, and residential student life.
We will continue to update you with more information as soon as we can.
Additionally, media access to the campus has been suspended.
Media access to campus is suspended. Campus is accessible only to CUID-holders and essential personnel as a safety measure and that includes media.
