House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi doubled-down on former President Barack Obama’s “war on coal” this week; unveiling her plan to shutter over 30% of US coal plants by 2020 should her party retake control of Congress.
“Under President Obama, we went on to pass the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act in the House. But we were stopped in the Senate by the coal industry,” Pelosi said Thursday.
“For this and other reasons, I’m so grateful to [Former New York City Mayor] Michael Bloomberg’s ‘Beyond Coal’ initiative working with the Sierra Club. It is so essential,” she added.
“[Beyond Coal] advocates retiring a third of the nation’s coal plants by 2020, replacing most retired coal plants with “clean energy solutions such as wind, solar, and geothermal” and ‘keeping coal in the ground in places like Appalachia and Wyoming’s Powder River Basin,’” writes Fox News.

NEGATIVE NANCY: Pelosi TRASHES Coal Power, Mocks West Virginia Ahead of Midterms
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi unloaded on the President’s recent decision to rescind Obama-era regulations on coal-fired power plants this week, citing her religious values and saying “with all due respect to West Virginia” we won’t be having new coal plants.
Pelosi was speaking at the Public Policy Institute in California when she was asked to weigh-in on the White House’s new guidelines surrounding energy production; saying we have to protect “God’s creation.”
“It really is a moral issue if you believe as I do that this is God’s creation we have to be good stewards of it,” Pelosi said. “We have envangelicals and others with us, er, some, those who believe in God’s creation. So, in any case this was a big thing for us. I had to fight some Democrats. Senator Byrd had a coal powered plan fueling the Capitol… that’s gonna go, with all due respect to West Virginia we’re not gonna have a coal power plant floating around.”
GORE GOES GLOBAL: Al Gore Says Germany FALLING BEHIND on Climate Change
Former Vice President and climate change crusader Al Gore took his war against fossil fuels to Europe this week, warning Germany their efforts to fight global warming were rapidly becoming “out of date.”
According to Politico, Gore was speaking in Berlin to a group of “climate change activists” when he called-out Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government for losing its edge in the global fight against pollution.
“Germany was a model for the rest of the world and a narrative took hold here in Germany that might be summarized as ‘Germany leads and everyone follows,’” Gore told Politico. “But that narrative is now out of date.”
“Germany is in danger of being left behind as more aggressive EU governments seize the lead,” he added. “The competitive advantages and job creation advantages of the sustainability revolution put Germany at risk of being left behind. Of course, the subsidies for coal in Germany are enormous.”
Merkel made international headlines years ago when she ordered Germany to move away from nuclear energy -which accounted for nearly 20% of its power production- in the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
As a result, the nation turned towards coal and other fossil fuels to mitigate the energy crisis.
