President Donald Trump rolled out a new nickname Friday for Zohran Mamdani, who is the clear frontrunner in New York City’s mayoral race.
“I call him my little communist. He’s my little communist mayor,” Trump said during an extended Fox & Friends interview.
Mamdani, 33, a democratic socialist from Queens, stunned the political world in June by defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates to secure the Democratic nomination in the nation’s largest city.
His platform includes eliminating fares on New York City buses, making CUNY tuition-free, freezing rents on municipal housing, providing free childcare for kids up to age 5, and creating government-run grocery stores.
Trump immediately blasted Mamdani after his primary win as a “100% Communist Lunatic” and has since warned New York would become “a communist city” if he prevails in November.
“We should never be in a position where we’re talking about a communist,” Trump said Friday.
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, would be the city’s first Muslim and first millennial mayor if elected.
With less than two months until Election Day, Mamdani holds a commanding 22-point lead over Cuomo and other rivals, according to new polls from Quinnipiac University and the New York Times/Siena College.
