Federal authorities are investigating after a massive “86 47” message appeared etched into the grass on the National Mall Thursday, prompting concern from the Trump Administration ahead of President Donald Trump’s birthday and a major UFC event planned outside the White House.
The numbers, visible from the live webcam atop the Washington Monument, appeared as dead grass east of the World War II Memorial.
The phrase “86 47” has been interpreted by some Trump allies and administration officials as a threatening political message directed at the president, who is serving as the nation’s 47th commander in chief.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle condemned the display in a statement.
“Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible,” Ingle said.
When asked about the incident, the White House referred questions to the Department of the Interior, which oversees the National Mall through the National Park Service.
“The deranged vandalism on our National Mall will not be tolerated,” an Interior Department spokesperson told The Hill.
“Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.”
