The Food and Drug Administration unveiled its plan to purge menthol-flavored tobacco products from shelves across the United States Thursday; claiming the items are targeted at younger Americans and minority communities.
“Banning menthol — the last allowable flavor — in cigarettes and banning all flavors in cigars will help save lives, particularly among those disproportionately affected by these deadly products,” acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said in a statement.
The proposal will likely take at least one year to implement.

The Biden administration is considering a ban on menthol-flavored tobacco products in the weeks ahead; claiming the “mint” cigarettes are targeted at younger Americans and specifically children.
“The administration also is poised to say it will seek to ban menthol and other flavors in mass-produced cigars, including small cigars popular with young people, according to administration officials familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss it publicly,” reports the Washington Post.
“It could be years before such bans would take effect, but the administration’s announcement is likely to be hailed by antismoking organizations as a critical and long-overdue step in curbing tobacco use and improving public health. Despite sharp declines in smoking in recent years, tobacco use remains a leading source of illness and death in the United States and worldwide, especially among people of color,” adds the Post.
“Reports that the Biden administration will ban menthol-flavored cigarettes is a welcome development. Flavored tobacco products are often marketed to young people and minority communities and are a gateway to a lifetime of health problems. They should be removed from the market,” posted Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

VAPE NO MORE? FDA Releases New Regulations on Vaping Products Across the USA
The Trump administration unveiled a series of new regulations regarding Vaping products sold across the United States Thursday; announcing tightened rules on a product many believe targets teenagers.
The Food and Drug Administration will prohibit the sale of fruit, sweetened, or mint flavored vaping products from gas stations, retail outlets, and convenience stores in all 50 states. Tobacco and Menthol-flavors remain available.
Experts claim the sweetened varieties directly appeal to young Americans, many of whom view the product as a “healthier alternative” to traditional cigarettes.
“The decision comes after news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that another person died of what appears to be a vaping-related respiratory disease. CDC research has associated vaping products that contained THC — or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the active chemical in marijuana that causes a ‘high’ — with the cases of lung-related illnesses,” reports Fox News.
