The Democratic Party continued to lurch left this week when Boston City Council member Ayanna Pressley defeated 10-term Representative Michael Capuano; stunning political insiders just weeks ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
Pressley -notably backed by fellow progressive and liberal outsider Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez- is running unopposed this fall and will likely be the first African-American woman elected to the House from Massachusetts.

.@AyannaPressley + I bonded over running while constantly told it’s “not our turn,” that we “weren’t ready,” “good enough,” or “experienced” enough.
We kept going anyway.
In June, I won my primary. Tonight, she won hers.
Here’s to November.? pic.twitter.com/4Xf8AnTMUQ

“The prospect of a Pressley upset had drawn some comparisons to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s defeat of Crowley in June. The New York democratic socialist had endorsed Pressley, as did Our Revolution, the offshoot of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign,” writes Fox News.
“This is a fight for the soul of our party and the future of our democracy,” Pressley told reporters. “This is a disruptive candidacy, a grassroots coalition. It is broad and diverse and deep. People of every walk of life.”
CORTEZ CONFUSION: Cortez Cites PARKS, ‘Eating Sandwiches’ as 'Examples of Socialism'
Liberal superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez left American voters scratching their heads this week; bizarrely citing National Parks and eating breakfast sandwiches as examples of Democratic Socialism.
Cortez posted the strange comments on social media after returning from a “few days off” spent at Acadia National Park; citing the nature preserve and “supporting worker-owned businesses” as American “examples of Democratic Socialism.”
Back home after a lovely few days off enjoying US examples of Democratic Socialism, like:
– Acadia National Park
– Café Co-ops (Def Top 5 best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever had 🍳)
– Supporting worker-owned businesses
– Bonus: Spotted a @PPact helping people, per usual✌🏽💜 pic.twitter.com/xmiYXutfpS— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) August 19, 2018
Cortez’ comments come just days after she came under fire for banning press and journalists from a series of town hall events; adding the speaking engagements were considered “sanctuary spaces.”
CORTEZ CONFUSION: Cortez Urges ‘Imperfect People’ to Run for Congress, Calls GOP ‘Corny’
Socialist superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continued to ruffle feathers among voters in New York Thursday; bizarrely urging “imperfect people” to run for office and calling the Republican Party “corny.”
The self-described Democratic Socialist posted the unusual comments on social media Thursday morning; saying “More imperfect people need to run for office” and calling her GOP opponents “corny.”
Why is the GOP so corny?
You can front a band and run for office. You can pierce your nose, be a bartender, a teacher, a stay at home parent; wear a dress or rip your jeans – none of this disqualifies you from advancing the fight for healthcare, education, housing, and justice. https://t.co/NuVgmJmOFE
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) August 30, 2018
More imperfect people need to run for office. We need to eliminate the idea of “perfect” candidates – there’s no such thing.
What matters are your values and the platform you’re fighting for.
When the opposition goes into personal nonsense, it’s because they‘re empty handed.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) August 30, 2018
Cortez comments come just hours after her liberal colleague Cynthia Nixon squared off against Governor Andrew Cuomo, where the sitting NY leader referred to federal ICE agents as a “bunch of thugs.”
