IT’S OFFICIAL: Portland Becomes Latest City to Slash Funding for the Police Department

posted by Hannity Staff - 6.22.20

The Portland City Council passed a budget last week that trims $15 million worth of funding from the police department; following Los Angeles, New York City, and other places to cut finances for law enforcement.

“The Portland City Council passed a budget last week cutting at least $15 million from the police bureau, according to local news outlets, following weeks of protesters’ cries to ‘defund the police.’ The budget for the upcoming fiscal year also includes $4.8 million in funding for Portland Street Response, a program proposed as an alternative to policing,” reports The Hill.

“The pilot program was born out of research and advocacy by Street Roots, a local newspaper that works with the houseless community, which led to a pilot proposal from Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty’s office in 2019,” adds the website.

PORTLAND CHAOS: Rioters Use Bike Locks to Trap Police Inside Precinct, Dept Asks for Help on Twitter

posted by Hannity Staff - 6.17.20

Rioters in Portland, Oregon used rope and a bicycle lock to trap officers inside a local police station; leaving the abandoned cops to ask for help on social media while violence swirled outside.

“Locking the Justice Center from the outside presented serious life safety concerns for the adults in custody and employees inside the building. The demonstrators have moved away from the building and the doors are re-opened,” posted the Department on social media.

“The front door to Central Precinct was locked from the outside with the u-lock,” another tweet read. “It had to be cut off from the outside so those inside could leave. The rope was taken by protesters from the flagpole and tied to the roll-up doors on the Southeast corner of the building.”

PORTLAND CRISIS: City Deploys ‘Mobile Hygiene Stations’ to Homeless Encampments, Tent Cities

posted by Hannity Staff - 10.24.19

Portland officials continued their struggle with the region’s spiraling homeless crisis this week; deploying “mobile hygiene stations” and temporary toilets to tent cities and illegal encampments.

“As the homeless crisis continues to simmer in Oregon’s largest city, local officials working with nonprofit groups have deployed mobile hygiene stations in a bid to clean up some of the largest encampments,” reports Fox News. “Portland, with a metropolitan area of about 2.4 million people, has joined West Coast cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco in struggling with a growing homeless crisis that ranks among the worst in the country.”

Portland has the fourth highest number of transient people in the United States when adjusted for total population; double the national average.

These are campsites that for a very long time have been generating concerns and safety issues,” Denis Theiault, a spokesman for the Joint Office for Homeless Services, told FOX12 on Tuesday. “Not just public safety issues but health and safety issues for the folks who are camping there as well as the folks who are near those sites.”
