Sen. Lindsey Graham’s final trip through the nation’s capital is drawing presidents, lawmakers and international leaders to honor a political survivor whose influence stretched from the Senate floor to battlefields overseas.
Graham’s remains arrived at the U.S. Capitol Tuesday morning for a closed ceremony in the Rotunda, beginning two days of tributes in Washington and his home state of South Carolina.
An Armed Forces Body Bearer Team carried Graham’s casket into the Capitol in recognition of his military service. A U.S. Capitol Police memorial guard honored his more than three decades in Congress.
Vice President JD Vance was expected to speak during the Rotunda ceremony, according to the Associated Press.
“For so many of us in the Senate and the House, myself included, Lindsey was more than a colleague; he was a friend,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said ahead of the tribute.
After the ceremony in the Rotunda, funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Washington National Cathedral, where President Trump and others will pay tribute to the late senator.
