Intercepted conversation reveals Russian troops are shooting themselves in legs to avoid fighting

Various stories and accounts have emanated out of the Russia-Ukraine crisis of confusion and regret by Russian soldiers. “Morale is so low among invading Russian forces that soldiers have reportedly been shooting themselves in the legs to avoid fighting” reports The New York Post.

The desperate action includes “using Ukrainian ammunition to make it appear they were hit by the defenders.” This is only one of many indications that Russian troops are struggling to fight a war they were forced into.

Videos have surfaced of Russian troops stuck on the side of the road after they ran out of gas, and starving without food. Videos of Russian troops surrendering have emerged; one video even showed a young soldier surrendering and then calling his mother with Ukrainians.

Information has come out that soldiers were told false information and lies as to why they were invading Ukraine, such as that they were actually helping free Ukraine from a hostile takeover. The Russian propaganda is overwhelming.

According to the latest estimate from the Ukrainian government, the war has claimed as many as 14,000 lives of Russian troops. The New York Post reports on a conversation between soldiers that was intercepted by Belarusian media outlet NEXTA.

In the conversation, one Russian said “they’ve been shooting at us for 14 days. We’re scared. We’re stealing food, breaking into houses. We’re killing civilians.” The recording also overheard them say “Russian officers shoot themselves in the legs to go home. There are corpses everywhere.”

Another soldier was heard saying his comrades are “looking for Ukrainian ammunition in order to shoot themselves in the legs and go to hospital.” The Post notes that any deserters “face harsh punishment in the motherland, so using Ukrainian weapons and ammo on themselves allows them to make their self-inflicted wounds appear to be battlefield wounds, according to reports.”
