Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley unveiled his plan Friday afternoon to abolish the Electoral College; introducing new legislation that would eliminate the “undemocratic” institution and provide a “pathway to full voting representation.”
“It’s time to end the undemocratic Electoral College, and to ensure a pathway to full voting representation for all American citizens, regardless of whether they live in Portland or Puerto Rico,” said Merkley.
The legislation would revise the current rules and directly elect the President of the United States through a popular vote.
Leading Democratic presidential candidates -including Senators Cory Booker and Kamala Harris- have expressed an openness to ending the uniquely American election process.

Clinton published an unexpected article in the Atlantic Sunday evening titled, ‘American Democracy is in Crisis.” In it, the former Secretary of State calls for increased transparency behind political donations and fundraisers across the country.
“We need to overturn Citizens United and get secret money out of our politics. And you won’t be surprised to hear that I passionately believe it’s time to abolish the Electoral College,” writes Clinton.
“Democracy may be our birthright as Americans, but it’s not something we can ever take for granted. Every generation has to fight for it, has to push us closer to that more perfect union. That time has come again,” she adds.
