The U.S. military has taken a new electronic warfare system with a heavy-metal name to sea for the first time.
Meet “Hammer of the Gods.”
The portable emitter is designed to operate in contested environments where GPS signals, communications and precision weapons can be jammed or disrupted.
The Army, Navy and Space Force tested a maritime version off Southern California in mid-July during Project Convergence Capstone 6, a large joint military experiment.
Land-based versions have appeared in exercises over the past two years. This test marked the system’s maritime debut.
Unlike the name suggests, Hammer of the Gods does not drop explosives or fire projectiles. It fights with radio signals.
Modern militaries depend on positioning, navigation and timing data, commonly called PNT, to guide ships, aircraft, drones, artillery and missiles. GPS is one of the most important sources of that information.
Disrupt the signal and a precision weapon can lose accuracy. Jam it badly enough and the weapon may miss its target or fail to complete its mission.
Lt. Col. Darrin Hall of U.S. Space Forces Pacific said PNT disruption can directly affect long-range artillery, guided missiles and cruise munitions.
Hammer of the Gods is designed to help American forces operate and experiment inside that electronic fog. Its capabilities include a low electromagnetic signature and a mesh communications network that can extend connectivity when normal channels are degraded.
That means the system may help interfere with an adversary’s navigation while keeping friendly forces connected.
The military has not disclosed the system’s range, detailed operating methods or specific performance against live precision weapons.
Officials said the July experiment demonstrated that counter-PNT equipment could be deployed, controlled and recovered during realistic maritime operations.
