Famed food website Epicurious officially banned beef recipes from their pages this week to become “pro-planet” and help combat climate change.
“It might not feel like much, but cutting out just a single ingredient—beef—can have an outsize impact on making a person’s cooking more environmentally friendly,” Epicurious Senior Editor Maggie Hoffman and former Digital Director David Tamarkin explained in an article published Monday. “Beef won’t appear in new Epicurious recipes, articles, or newsletters. It will not show up on our homepage. It will be absent from our Instagram feed.”
Today we announced that Epicurious is cutting out beef. It won’t appear in new Epi recipes, articles, newsletters, or on social. This isn’t a vendetta against cows or people who eat them. It’s a shift about sustainability; not anti-beef but pro-planet. https://t.co/yQ8PrtChtE

“Cattle (raised for both beef and milk, as well as for inedible outputs like manure and draft power) are the animal species responsible for the most emissions, representing about 65% of the livestock sector’s emissions,” claims the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization.
“Our readers have rallied around the recipes we published in beef’s place,” Hoffman and Tamarkin said. “The traffic and engagement numbers on these stories don’t lie: When given an alternative to beef, American cooks get hungry.”

GREEN NEW MEAL! Bill Gates Says USA Must Switch to ‘100% Synthetic Beef’ to Fight Global Warming
Billionaire Bill Gates urged all Americans and residents in other “rich countries” Tuesday to switch to “100% synthetic beef” to combat global warming and climate change in the years ahead.
“Impossible and Beyond have a road map, a quality road map and a cost road map, that makes them totally competitive,” Gates said, referencing popular plant-based meat corporations. “As for scale today, they don’t represent 1% of the meat in the world, but they’re on their way.”

“Eventually, that green premium is modest enough that you can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand,” Gates said. “So for meat in the middle-income-and-above countries, I do think it’s possible.”
“I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef,” concluded the Microsoft founder. “You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time.”

GREEN NEW MEAL! California Restaurants to Implement ‘Optional’ 1% TAX to Combat Climate Change
Restaurants across California are poised to introduce an “optional” one percent tax to help patrons offset their carbon emissions and negate other harmful environmental impacts caused by their personal dining experience.
“The Restore California Renewable Restaurant program will give diners the opportunity to pay the voluntary fee as an addition to their check,” reports The Hill. “The money will go to a public fund run by the California Air Resources Board that helps farmers who use sustainable practices to reduce carbon emissions.”
The program officially kicked-off last Tuesday and is available to any restaurant throughout the Golden State that chooses to participate.
“Restore California closes the economic loop between producers and consumers, creating a renewable food system,” the website states.
