The number of US workers filing unemployment claims plunged to the lowest level in over 49-years this week; posting figures not seen in the American economy since 1969.
“Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 199,000 for the week ended Jan. 19, the lowest level since mid-November in 1969 when 197,000 applications were recorded,” writes Reuters.
“The dollar was stronger against a basket of currencies. The partial shutdown of the federal government so far appears to be having a limited impact on the claims data,” adds the report.
The strong economic data comes as the partial government shutdown dragged into its fifth week, with Speaker Pelosi refusing to budge on President Trump’s border security demands.
