GAINING ON THE GAVEL: McCarthy Picks Up Critical Votes, Still Falls Short in 12th Attempt

posted by Hannity Staff - 1.06.23

We’re still at a stalemate.

On day four of the vote to elect the Speaker of the House, GOP frontrunner Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) still fell short by just a handful of votes —but he’s finally starting to show progress, picking up key votes from the Freedom Caucus.

McCarthy flipped 14 votes to his side for the first time in the first Friday vote. Reps.-elect Dan Bishop, R-NC; Joshua Brecheen, R-Okla.; Mike Cloud, R-Texas; Andrew Clyde, R-Ga.; Byron Donalds, R-Fla.; Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla.; Mary Miller, R-Ill.; Ralph Norman, R-SC; Scott Perry, R-Pa.; and Chip Roy, R-Texas; and Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas; Paul Gosar, R-Ariz.; and Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn. switched their vote to McCarthy from another candidate. Rep.-elect Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., switched her vote from present to McCarthy.

From Fox News:

[Scott] Perry, chair of the HFC, tweeted he switched his vote in good-faith after reviewing McCarthy’s renewed plan for speaker.

“We’re at a turning point. I’ve negotiated in good faith, with one purpose: to restore the People’s House back to its rightful owners,” Perry tweeted. “The framework for an agreement is in place, so in a good-faith effort, I voted to restore the People’s House by voting for @gopleader McCarthy.”

Rep.-elect Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, was nominated for the speaker post by Rep.-elect Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who asked if continued attempts to elect McCarthy were an “exercise in vanity.”

Jordan has continued to support McCarthy for speaker despite previous nominations from his colleagues to oppose him.

Rep.-elect Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., added another nomination for Rep.-elect Kevin Hern, R-Okla.
