DEVELOPING: House Panel Advances Legislation to Examine Reparations for Slavery in America

posted by Hannity Staff - 4.15.21

A committee in the House of Representatives officially recommended Wednesday evening the creation of a new panel that would examine reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans in America.

“The vote by the House Judiciary Committee was a major milestone for proponents of reparations, who have labored for decades to build mainstream support for redressing the lingering effects of slavery. Democrats on the panel advanced the legislation establishing the commission over Republican objections, 25 to 17,” reports the New York Times.

The bill — labeled H.R. 40 after the unfulfilled Civil War-era promise to give former slaves ‘40 acres and a mule’ — still faces steep odds of becoming law. With opposition from some Democrats and unified Republicans, who argue that Black Americans do not need a government handout for long-ago crimes, neither chamber of Congress has committed to a floor vote,” adds the newspaper.

“We’re asking for people to understand the pain, the violence, the brutality, the chattel-ness of what we went through,” Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Democrat of Texas, said.

“We understand that we don’t need a study to take action right now on systemic racism,” Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, told reporters in February. “So he wants to take actions within his own government in the meantime.”

AOC: Coronavirus Response ‘Should Be Drafted With a Lens of Reparations’

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez surprised millions of users on social media Friday; demanding the federal government’s Coronavirus response be “drafted with a lens of reparations.”

“COVID deaths are disproportionately spiking in Black + Brown communities. Why? Because the chronic toll of redlining, environmental racism, wealth gap, etc. ARE underlying health conditions. Inequality is a comorbidity. COVID relief should be drafted with a lens of reparations,” posted AOC on Twitter.

The Congresswoman made similar comments over Amazon’s response to the pandemic.

“Amazon’s attempt to smear Chris Smalls, one of their own warehouse workers, as ‘not smart or articulate’ is a racist & classist PR campaign. If execs are as concerned abt worker health & safety as they claim, then they should provide the full paid sick leave ALL workers deserve,” posted AOC on Twitter.

“Jeff Bezos: The richest man in the world. Amazon: Pays $0 in federal income taxes. Workers: Unable to get the protection they need,” added Sen. Bernie Sanders. “The greed has got to end. I stand with Amazon workers who are fighting for their rights.”

‘MONEY BAGS’: Warren Blasts Bloomberg, Brags She’s Taken 85,000 ‘Selfies’ Since Campaign Launch

Senator Elizabeth Warren ripped New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg Monday; accusing the former Big Apple Mayor of using “bags of money” to try and purchase the 2020 Democratic primary.

“Michael Bloomberg may think he doesn’t need people to win this election—he just needs bags of money. He’s wrong. That’s why I’m investing in meeting thousands of voters, taking over 85,000 selfies, and building a grassroots movement that will fight for big, structural change,” said Warren.

“America was founded on principles of liberty and built on the backs of enslaved people. It is time for our government to face this truth. Time for America to have a full-blown national conversation about reparations,” said the Senator in Atlanta last week.

Warren also doubled-down on the Democrats’ year-long claim that Stacey Abrams is the rightful governor of Georgia; saying the midterm elections reveal how “broken” America’s “democracy” has become.

“Right now, our democracy is broken. How do I know? Because Brian Kemp is sitting in @StaceyAbrams’ chair. And we are all grateful to Stacey for what she’s doing to make sure that never happens again in this country,” posted Warren on social media.
