Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi raised eyebrows within her own party on Thursday, drawing fire from top Democrats after she “offensively” referred to the bipartisan group of legislators tackling immigration reform as “white guys.”
The House Minority Leader made her incendiary remarks while speaking with reporters at her weekly press briefing, labeling lawmakers seeking to find a permanent solution to DACA as “the five white guys.”
“The five white guys I call them, you know,” Pelosi quipped, complaining that there were not enough minorities involved in the immigration debate. “Are they going to open a hamburger stand next or what?”
Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer –one of Pelosi’s “white guys”- blasted the leader’s comments, calling the remarks “offensive” in a statement released to Politico.
“That comment is offensive. I am committed to ensuring DREAMers are protected and I will welcome everyone to the table who wants to get this done,” Hoyer said.
A spokesperson for the House Minority Leader pushed back against Hoyer’s comments, saying, “Leader Pelosi has every confidence in the leadership of Whip Hoyer and Senator Durbin, which they have demonstrated on this topic for years.”
Pelosi Says ‘God Is With’ Democrats on DACA
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi believes liberal lawmakers have the moral high ground on the ongoing immigration debate in the United States, strangely suggesting that “God is with” the Democratic Party regarding DACA and Dreamers.
The House Minority Leader was addressing reporters on Thursday when she was asked if she’d be willing to accept border wall funding or a crackdown on illegal immigration to reach a deal with President Trump on DACA.
“Have you changed your mind at all about being willing to accept some border wall funding or immigration crackdown funding within a DREAM Act fix?” asked one journalist.
“We’ve said to the president the night he agreed to the DACA legislation that we have a responsibility to protect our border, and we find — think are many things we can do working together to do that. And members have been working in a bipartisan way to address that,” said Pelosi.
“But I’m optimistic. I always have been. God is with us on this. Our country is great. We know their greatness springs from the vitality that newcomers bring to our country. 80 percent at least of the American people support the DREAMers,” she added.

Crying 'Wolf' in a Theater? Confused Pelosi Bungles First Amendment
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi gave a confused interview with a local television station this week, mixing up metaphors when asked if white supremacists and other hate groups were protected under the First Amendment.
Speaking with San Francisco’s KRON, the House Minority Leader was pressed over whether hate groups, such as the KKK, had a right to protest in public places. The issue made headlines in California earlier this week, when a right-wing group requested a permit to protest from the National Park Service.
“How could the Park Service justify denying that organization their free speech rights?” asked the reporter.
“Because the constitution does not say that a person can shout, can yell ‘wolf’ in a crowded theater. If you are endangering people then you don’t have a constitutional right to do that,” a confused Pelosi responded.
The former Speaker was seemingly referencing a 1919 Supreme Court Decision that limited a person’s right to free speech when their words could incite a panic.
“The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic,” said Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
