During a panel discussion on CNN’sĀ Inside Politics, host Dana Bash introduced a bit of audio from the recent conversation between Elon Musk and Donald Trump that was edited to sound as if the two were downplaying the seriousness of nuclear bombs.
āI wanna play one exchange that was kind of classic. Well, there were a lot of exchanges that were classic Donald Trump, but this one really stuck out to us,ā Bash told CNN panelists.
āHiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed, but now theyāre, theyāre like full cities again,ā Musk said at the start of CNNās clip.
āRight, well, thatās great,ā Trump responded.
āSo, itās really not something that, you knowāā Musk continued.
āThatās great,ā Trump said.
āSo itās, itās not as scary as people think basically,ā Musk said, concluding CNNās clip.
āSo that was more Elon Musk than Donald Trump talking about, sort of suggesting that what happened almost 80 years ago, 80 years ago next year, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, now itās okay, um, trying to kind of blow off the impact of that,ā Bash said.
The unedited audio reveals the conversation was actually about nuclear energy and the branding around the word “nuclear.”
āMaybe theyāll have to change the name! The name is the rough thing. There are some areas, like when you see what happen ā weāll have to rebrand it. Weāll have to give it a nickname. Weāll name it after you or something,ā Trump told Musk.
āWhen you see what happened in Japan, where they say, āYou wonāt be able to go on the land for about 3,000 years,ā did you ever see that? And in Russia, where they had the problem. Where they had a lot of bad things happen. And they have a problem. And they say in 2,000 years, people will start to occupy the land again. You know, you realize itās pretty bad,ā Trump continued.
āItās actually not that bad, like, after Fukushima happened in Japan, people were asking me in California, you know, are we worried about the nuclear plant in Japan. Iām like, no, thatās crazy. Itās actually, itās not even dangerous in Fukushima.ā
Bash conceded, after the deceptive clip, that the two were discussing nuclear energy.
āThere they were having a conversation about nuclear energy,ā Bash told CNN panelists. āThey did have substantive conversations about it, and what Trump said ā well, first of all, I want you to react to this. What Trump was talking about there was that nuclear energy has a branding problem. Heās not wrong.ā
