The city of Somerville, Massachusetts announced their plans to ditch the annual Columbus Day festivities this year; instituting a new celebration in honor of the region’s ‘Indigenous Peoples.’
Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone unveiled the new holiday Thursday, joining other New England town’s such as Portland, Maine and Durham, New Hampshire who have opted to scrap the traditional American holiday in recent years.
In a Facebook post Thursday, Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone announced that on Oct. 8, the city would observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, recognizing Native American heritage rather than extolling Christopher Columbus and his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. https://t.co/DgXfjtRmBT

“Columbus Day is a relic of an outdated and oversimplified version of history,” Curtatone posted on social media. “We all know there’s more to the story than a nursery rhyme.”
“This issue is a lot like the Confederate flag for southerners,” Curtatone added. “We are proud of our heritage. Yet the specifics of this holiday run so deep into human suffering that we need to shift our pride elsewhere.”
IT BEGINS: Left-Wing Activists Attack ANOTHER Columbus Memorial in NYC
Vandals attacked yet another Christopher Columbus Statue in New York City this week, spray painting “Don’t Honor Genocide” over the memorial as the nation struggles to respond to a natural disaster unfolding on the Gulf coast.
The criminals attacked the memorial in the Queens section of New York City, defacing the famed explorer’s statue with graffiti that read “Don’t Honor Genocide” and “Take It Down.”
“I’m upset, because I live here all my life, and I don’t like seeing the neighborhood being destroyed – our history. What’s next, George Washington and federal hall?” a woman told a local news station.
This is the fifth such incident in recent weeks that vandals and unidentified assailants have attacked Columbus memorials throughout the country; including Baltimore, Houston, New York, and Buffalo.
The attack comes as the debate over historical landmarks and symbols rages throughout the country, with many left-wing activists calling for the removal of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington statues because of their slave-owning histories.
Hyper-liberal NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio recently stated that the city’s iconic statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus Circle is currently “under review” to determine if the monument commemorates a “symbol of hate.”
IT BEGINS: Left-Wing Activists Destroy Oldest Columbus Monument in USA
Left-wing activists and protesters smashed what is believed to be the oldest standing Christopher Columbus statue in the United States; attacking the 225-year old monument with bats and saying the explorer symbolized “the initial invasion of European capitalism” in the Western Hemisphere.
The vandals posted a video of the incident on social media, assaulting the monument as a narrator outlined the groups grievances against Columbus, who they described as a “genocidal terrorist.”
“White supremacy and the systems that sustain it must be replaced or people will continue to suffer and the planet will continue to die. Part of our evolution as humans requires tearing down monuments to destructive forces and tearing down systems that maintain them,” says the narrator.
The criminal act comes as the nation struggles with the place of Confederate War memorials in public squares throughout the country, with many calling for the removal of the monuments and others hailing the sites as a part of their heritage.
President Trump weighed-in on the issue last week, warning that removing the historic monuments may lead to a slippery slope, with activists calling for the removal of Thomas Jefferson or George Washington memorials in the near-future.
“So this week, it is Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down,” said the President during a press conference in New York. “I wonder, is it George Washington next week? And is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?”
