What was supposed to be Jill Biden’s big book-tour moment quickly turned into a Biden family spectacle.
The former first lady was wrapping up a discussion of her newly released memoir, “A View from the East Wing,” with moderator Whoopi Goldberg at New York’s 92nd Street Y on Tuesday when an unexpected guest decided to take center stage.
Former President Joe Biden, 83, rose from his seat in the audience and wandered toward the stage as the event neared its conclusion.
The interruption came after Goldberg read a comment from an audience member thanking Biden for his years of public service. Jill Biden stood and applauded her husband, but the moment soon took an unexpected turn.
“I have a question,” Biden said unprompted from the audience, without a microphone.
“Joe has a question, like you couldn’t ask it later?” Jill Biden replied.
“Who do you love most in the whole world?” the former president asked.
“Whoopi,” Jill answered, drawing laughter from the crowd.
The joke appeared to land with the audience, but Biden remained standing and continued staring toward the stage as Goldberg attempted to move the conversation forward.
Eventually, Jill Biden gave the answer many in the room suspected he was looking for.
“I love you most, Joe. Was that it? Was that the answer he wanted?” she said.
Biden then chimed in again.
“It’s overwhelming, isn’t it?” he remarked, though he remained difficult to hear without a microphone.
Jill Biden attempted to smooth over the unusual exchange with humor.
“Overwhelming, well, that’s what keeps him on his toes, he’s never 100% sure, I always keep him guessing, is that not true?” she said.
The former president responded by lowering his head and making the sign of the cross, prompting another round of laughter from the audience.
As organizers appeared eager to wrap up the evening, Goldberg encouraged attendees to purchase Jill Biden’s new memoir. But Biden wasn’t finished.
Standing near the stage as exit music began to play, the former president tried to get another word in edgewise.
“My book…” Biden began before a staffer emerged from backstage and handed him a microphone.
“My book, which comes out in September, read it…” he told the crowd.
That prompted another playful jab from his wife.
“Do I have to remind him that this is my event?” Jill Biden asked.
Before the evening finally came to a close, Biden delivered one last compliment.
“The only thing that Jill does better than write, she’s a beautiful woman,” he said.
