UPDATE From DR. OZ: WHY ARE MORE MEN DYING FROM COVID-19 THAN WOMEN?
*OUTBREAK UPDATE with DR. OZ*
AS THE NUMBER OF COVID-19 CASES CONTINUES TO RISE…AN UNEXPECTED PATTERN HAS EMERGED: THE VIRUS IS KILLING MORE MEN THAN WOMEN.
FROM CHINA TO SOUTH KOREA, ITALY TO FRANCE, AND EVEN SOME STATES HERE IN THE U.S…THE MAJORITY OF CORONAVIRUS VICTIMS ARE PROVING TO BE MALE. WHICH BEGS THE QUESTION – WHAT IS CAUSING THIS DIFFERENCE IN MORTALITY?
SOME EXPERTS HYPOTHESIZE IT MIGHT BE TIED TO DIFFERENCES IN LIFESTYLE HABITS: MEN TEND TO SMOKE AND DRINK MORE OFTEN THAN WOMEN. OR MAYBE IT HAS TO DO WITH OVERALL HEALTH: MEN, ON AVERAGE, HAVE MORE UNDERLYING HEART AND LUNG CONDITIONS THAN THEIR FEMALE COUNTERPARTS.
IT TURNS OUT GENETICS MIGHT ALSO BE AT PLAY. EMERGING RESEARCH SUGGESTS WOMEN’S BODIES COULD BE BETTER AT FIGHTING OFF INFECTION…THANKS TO THEIR HORMONES AND GENES ON THEIR X CHROMOSOMES.
WE CAN’T CONCLUSIVELY SAY WHAT IS DRIVING THIS DIVIDE, AND MORE RESEARCH IS NEEDED TO DETERMINE THE ROLE OF BIOLOGY. BUT WITHOUT A DOUBT, IT’S AN IMPORTANT TREND WE’LL NEED TO MONITOR AS THIS PANDEMIC CONTINUES.
I’M DR. OZ – AND THIS HAS BEEN YOUR COVID-19 NEWS MINUTE.
DR OZ on HANNITY: FDA ‘Did the Right Thing’ in Allowing Doctors to Prescribe Hydroxychloroquine’
Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke with Sean Hannity Monday night on the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic; saying the FDA “did the right thing” in allowing doctors to prescribe a series of drugs to help treat the deadly disease.
“Dr. Oz, you have literally been working around the clock, talking to every doctor in every country, how hopeful are you?” asked Hannity.
“We need the clinical trials, as you’ve emphasized… Over the weekend, 80 people who got the drug were no longer infectious,” said Dr. Oz. “Did it work? 80 patients, one died, one in the ICU, that result is meaningfully better than what you would have expected.”
“I think the FDA did the right thing when they allowed doctors to use this medication while we’re trying to figure out what these trials show us,” he added.
