‘BIG CHEATING’: Trump Launches Probe Into California Ballot Delays

posted by Hannity Staff - 6.04.26

President Donald Trump erupted Thursday over California’s slow-moving vote count, accusing Democrats of trying to steal the state’s gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral primaries as officials continued processing millions of ballots days after polls closed.

“The Dumocrats are at it again,” Trump wrote on TRUTH Social.

“They are trying to STEAL THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA PRIMARY, AND THE MAYOR OF LOS ANGELES, PRIMARY, AWAY FROM TWO GREAT REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES.”

Trump specifically pointed to the steady flow of mail-in ballots still being counted across the state, blasting what he described as “very late and massive numbers” appearing after Election Day.

In another post, Trump claimed a federal probe had been launched into the delayed tallying process.

“There’s big cheating by the Dumocrats in California. Votes are all tied up. May not be in for weeks,” Trump wrote.

“Under investigation by the US Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. Why [is] the vote counting delay???”

The White House did not immediately provide additional details about the purported investigation, and it remains unclear who formally initiated any federal review.

California officials, however, have long defended the state’s extended counting timeline as standard procedure due to the sheer size of the electorate and the state’s expansive vote-by-mail system.

Under California law, county election officials have up to 30 days after Election Day to complete the official canvass, verify signatures, process mail ballots and conduct mandatory post-election audits before certifying final results.

Because California accepts ballots postmarked by Election Day that arrive afterward, close races can remain unresolved for days or even weeks.

Election officials also typically release early in-person voting totals and previously received mail ballots first, with later batches continuing to reshape margins as counting progresses.

As of Thursday, only about 56% of ballots statewide had reportedly been counted.

Hannity’s Highlights

Trump accused Democrats of trying to “steal” California’s governor and Los Angeles mayor primaries — the president targeted the state’s ongoing vote count as results continue to trickle in days after Election Day.

Trump claimed a federal probe into the counting process is underway — while also blasting California’s extended ballot processing timeline as evidence of manipulation.

California law permits ballots postmarked by Election Day to arrive and be counted afterward — counties have up to 30 days to certify results, a standard practice that predates this election cycle.

Republican Steve Hilton remains in contention as ballot processing continues — the ongoing count means the final shape of the governor’s race is still not fully determined.

In the closely watched governor’s race, Republican candidate Steve Hilton remained among the leaders as additional results continued trickling in.

California’s “top two” primary system allows the two highest vote-getters to advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation, meaning multiple Democrats and Republicans often compete in the same primary field.

Trump and many Republicans have increasingly targeted California’s lengthy ballot-counting process as evidence of election dysfunction, particularly in races where margins tighten as late-arriving mail ballots are processed.
