Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a stern warning to sanctuary cities, stating that those prioritizing the protection of undocumented immigrants over public safety would face consequences. “Today, we didn’t just file a lawsuit against the city of Chicago,” Bondi stated. “We also took legal action against the state of Illinois, its mayor, its governor, and several others” Bondi stated on Fox News’ “Hannity”.
The 22-page lawsuit is the first of its kind filed under Bondi as Attorney General. “The provisions challenged in Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County law represent a deliberate attempt to block the federal government’s enforcement of immigration laws,” the lawsuit claims. It also asserts that these policies hinder necessary coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, ultimately jeopardizing public safety.
Bondi emphasized that the lawsuit aims to uphold the rule of law. In addition to the lawsuits, the Department of Justice has halted all federal funding to sanctuary jurisdictions, including states, cities, and nonprofit organizations, according to a memo Bondi released on Thursday.
“These officials are choosing to protect illegal aliens instead of ensuring the safety and security of their own citizens, as well as the law enforcement officers risking their lives to protect them,” she said.
Bondi made it clear that failure to comply with federal law would have consequences. “If you refuse to follow federal law, you will be next,” she warned, signaling a broader crackdown on sanctuary policies.
In the lawsuit against Chicago, Bondi argues that the city’s sanctuary policies obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations by interfering with arrests and deportations.
She also emphasized that the DOJ is refocusing its efforts on prosecuting violent crime and equipping law enforcement with the resources necessary to combat gangs, drug traffickers, and fentanyl dealers who are fueling the crisis on American streets.
