The former Chairman of the Missouri Republican Party ripped CNN on Friday, saying the network was ruthlessly exploiting the mother of a woman who died in Charlottesville, Virginia to viciously attack President Trump.
Ed Martin called out the news network during a segment covering the deadly protests that rocked Virginia over the weekend, as well as the President’s response.
CNN was repeatedly broadcasting the comments made by Susan Bro, mother of Heather Heyer, a young woman who was tragically murdered when a white nationalist drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters.
“It sounds to me like you used it at the beginning of this hour as a political cudgel,” Martin told the panel.
“I played what a grieving mother said,” responded CNN host Kate Bolduan.
“You say we’re going to put aside the political conversation until later,” Martin fired-back. “So, the idea that CNN put at the top of the hour this clip and says, ‘Look at that, isn’t the president wrong’…when you lose a child, you don’t get to have a political calculation foisted upon you by CNN or anybody else.”
“Yes, we ought to honor her, but we ought not to put it at the top of the hour and pretend that Cillizza is going to make it authoritative that the president is wrong,” he added.
