President Donald Trump revealed Thursday that the United States attempted to arm forces opposed to Iran’s regime in hopes of destabilizing Tehran’s government — but said the effort fell apart after Kurdish allies allegedly failed to follow through.
Speaking during an interview on Fox & Friends, Trump said the US sent weapons to Kurdish groups viewed as regional adversaries of the Iranian regime.
But according to the president, the weapons never made it where they were intended to go.
“The Kurds let us down,” Trump said during the interview. “But I’ll remember that, Kurds.”
Trump added that he was skeptical of the plan from the start because he believed Kurdish forces would “keep the weapons” instead of distributing them to anti-regime elements inside Iran.
The comments offered a rare public glimpse into what appears to have been a covert effort aimed at weakening the Islamic Republic from within as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue escalating.
Trump did not specify when the operation allegedly took place, what type of weapons were involved, or which Kurdish factions received the arms.
