Republicans are warning that Maine’s Senate race remains one of the GOP’s biggest vulnerabilities heading into November — despite a wave of damaging controversies surrounding Democrat nominee Graham Platner.
A new memo from the National Republican Senatorial Committee cautions Republicans against assuming Platner is too politically damaged to defeat Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, arguing that Democrats are rallying behind him rather than abandoning his candidacy.
“It is a fatal mistake to assume Platner is too damaged to win,” the memo warned.
The NRSC described Maine as the “linchpin” in the battle for Senate control and said Democrats are rapidly “consolidating” behind Platner despite the negative headlines dogging his campaign.
“The most important development of the last week is not another damaging story about Platner: It is the Democrat response to it; they are not abandoning him; they are propping him up,” the memo stated.
“National Democrats, donors, operatives, and activists are building a permission structure for voters to support Platner anyway.”
The memo urged Republicans to immediately treat Maine as a top-tier battleground race requiring major financial resources and full political urgency to protect Collins’ seat.
While expressing confidence Collins can prevail, the memo stressed that Republicans cannot afford complacency.
“Sen. Collins has won tough races before and can win this one, but only if we meet this moment with total urgency,” the memo concluded.
At the same time, Republican outside groups are escalating their attacks on Platner following his primary victory.
Senate Leadership Fund Executive Director Alex Latcham issued a blistering statement Wednesday morning portraying Platner as an unacceptable risk for Maine voters and for Senate Republicans nationally.
“Democrats have spoken and the stakes for Mainers this fall could not be higher,” Latcham said.
“While Sen. Susan Collins has demonstrated strong character, steady leadership, and unmatched effectiveness, Graham Platner is a dangerous deviant who cannot be trusted to represent the Pine Tree State.”
Latcham added that Platner’s candidacy could jeopardize Republican control of the Senate.
“Graham Platner presents a serious threat to the Republican Senate majority, and Senate Leadership Fund is proud to stand with Sen. Collins to ensure she is re-elected this November.”
The increasingly aggressive rhetoric signals national Republicans view Maine as one of the cycle’s most consequential Senate races, with control of the chamber potentially hanging in the balance.
