A bitter feud between Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Sen. Mark Kelly exploded into public view Sunday after Hegseth accused the Arizona Democrat of potentially revealing classified information following a closed-door Pentagon briefing.
The clash erupted after Kelly appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” with Margaret Brennan and discussed the strain the Iran conflict has placed on U.S. weapons stockpiles.
Kelly said it was “shocking how deep we have gone into these magazines” when asked whether lawmakers had been briefed on the war’s effect on America’s military readiness.
The former Navy pilot then rattled off several weapons systems he said had been heavily depleted, including Tomahawk missiles, Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), SM-3 interceptors, THAAD rounds, and Patriot missile batteries.
Kelly warned replenishing those stockpiles could take years and argued the shortages could complicate America’s ability to confront a future threat from China.
That set off Hegseth.
“‘Captain’ Mark Kelly strikes again,” Hegseth wrote in a blistering post on X.
“Now he’s blabbing on TV (falsely & dumbly) about a CLASSIFIED Pentagon briefing he received,” Hegseth continued. “Did he violate his oath… again? @DeptofWar legal counsel will review.”

Kelly quickly fired back, accusing Hegseth of hypocrisy and insisting the information had already been publicly discussed by the Pentagon chief himself during congressional testimony.
“We had this conversation in a public hearing a week ago and you said it would take ‘years’ to replenish some of these stockpiles,” Kelly wrote on X.
“That’s not classified, it’s a quote from you,” the senator added. “This war is coming at a serious cost and you and the president still haven’t explained to the American people what the goal is.”

The latest confrontation adds fuel to a months-long rivalry between the two men that has increasingly spilled into public view during the Iran conflict.
Earlier this year, Hegseth sharply criticized Kelly over his participation in a Democratic-led video urging military personnel to reject “illegal” orders from commanders — comments conservatives blasted as reckless and undermining military discipline.
