President Trump confirmed late Saturday that an armed man charged a security checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, triggering a rapid evacuation and heavy law enforcement response.
“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons,” Trump said in remarks from the White House briefing room.
The president praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for acting “very quickly” to neutralize the threat.
Trump had been attending the annual dinner at the Washington Hilton when shots were reported near the event’s screening area. Within moments, agents moved.
Trump was rushed out of the venue as security teams locked down the perimeter. Law enforcement later confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody.
The president added that the confrontation turned dangerous in an instant.

According to Trump, one officer was shot at close range during the incident but survived because of a bulletproof vest.
