President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Iran will not execute eight women protesters, calling the development “very good news” after he publicly urged their release a day earlier.
“I have just been informed that the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight in Iran will no longer be killed,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Four will be released immediately, and four will be sentenced to one month in prison.”
Trump added that he “very much appreciate[s]” that Iran’s leaders “respected my request, as President of the United States.”
The announcement landed just hours after Trump extended a two-week cease-fire with Iran, as U.S. negotiators await Tehran’s response to a broader proposal aimed at ending the nearly two-month conflict.
But Tehran quickly pushed back.
Iran’s judiciary denied that the eight women were ever facing execution, claiming Trump had been “misled once again by fake news.” Officials said some of the women had already been released, while others could face prison sentences if convicted.
That denial is being contested.
